Raw Material
All ferrous and non-ferrous materials associated with the manufacturing of all Electro-magnetic applications are maintained in our inventory.

Types:

  • Nickel Alloy - 50% and 80% alloys.
  • Silicon Electrical Steels - grain and non-oriented, fully and semi-processed
  • Cobalt Alloy
  • Non-ferrous materials
  • Stainless Steel
  • Cold Rolled Steel
  • Thickness .004" - .080"
  • Tempers Rockwell B90 stamping grade to full soft temper.

Material Coating
The normal surface oxide on both silicon and nickel flat rolled steels provide some degree of inter-laminar resistance that may be adequate for many applications. However, as additional inter-laminar resistance is generally desired, EMP laminations are coated, as appropriate for the material types:

  • Silicon Steel - inert positive coating applied by the mills. Additional or alternate coatings may be applied to thin gauge steel.

Nickel Alloy - a proprietary solution containing magnesium is applied for maximum insulation through annealing with minimum interference in work performance (coating thickness .0004" overall).

Slitting
EMP maintains inventories of standard materials in wide coil, as orders are received, material is slit to the appropriate width for the die which produces the part. This minimizes customer lead-time.

The quality of slitting directly affects the finished part, and in some cases a slit edge is on the finished part. Unlike EMP, most steel service centers are not qualified to slit electrical steels.

Stamping

  • EMP offers 20 high-speed production presses ranging from 2 ton to 100 tons in sizes handling die lengths to 44". Press speeds to 600spm.
  • SCR controls available for the more complex "state of the art" staking and indexing operations.
  • Adjustable cutoff tooling for the manufacture of shunt and strip (bar) laminations, and to modify standard product sizes.
  • All press stations are equipped with instrumentation to check tolerances, flatness and shear/break. The press operator maintains statistical production controls with authority to stop production for tool adjustments or sharpening.
  • All operators are qualified to set-up tooling. Precise set-up procedures are available along with the tool performance history.
  • Tooling is moved to die-service as needed and at completion of every run, where it is prepared for the next run cycle.

The operator is familiar with the customer that the parts are being produced for and any specific quality requirements.

Annealing
EMP offers several furnace styles as well as gas fired and electric heated. Furnace styles include:

  • Batch - 3 volume sizes to custom anneal varying load sizes
  • Furnaces are controlled by state of the art SCR controls with temperature control to ± 10° F and flexibility to adjust cycle times to meet specific requirements of the customer and the material.
  • Computer controls are employed to follow exacting time and temperature requirements over hours or days. The appropriate cycle is precisely reportable.
  • Chart recorders provide a record of every "heat". These are traceable to the incoming raw material and the steel manufacturers original melt.

Temperature ranges up to 2200° F.

Shipping
Shipping is organized to integrate with customer receiving programs such as "Just in Time", Kanban, etc. The department is informed of the specific requirements for each customer in order to meet the packaging and delivery requirements of each customer.

Shipping and packaging are as integral a part in the total picture as any of the other processing phases at EMP. Optimum packaging and mode of transportation is carefully considered to minimize freight charges without sacrifice to quality or packaging.

E & I type laminations are packed together as stamped, to insure equal thickness and quantities. A sheet of rust inhibiting paper (VPI paper) is routinely placed atop silicon laminations.

Shipping weights are carefully calculated on accurately calibrated weighing equipment to assure the accuracy of your shipments.

Quality Control
EMP complies with all rigid MIL specifications; i.e. MIL 45208A, MIL Q-9858A, MIL STD-45662 among them, and per ASTM-346-64 testing procedure. Nickel laminations are tested every lot to AQL MIL Spec 105-D - 1.5 level by 100% interleave at 60 Hertz regarding mechanical and electrical quality and consistency through every work station.
